Blogging if used correctly in line with basic search engine optimisation principles can be an excellent way to drive search traffic to your site. Every post you publish on your blog is potentially a keyword rich page waiting to be sat at the top of Google for the search term you wish to target.

To ensure you’re on the right track before you begin writing your post be sure to go through the following four principles, this will ensure you achieve a maximum rank and therefore Google will deliver maximum traffic to your site.

First of all think about what your going to write, are you going to include graphics or videos? Are you going to publish a post based on theory or is it going to include actual proof or testing? Are you going to make it light hearted or is it going to be deadly serious information? Whatever, think about how you are going to structure it and make it appealing to the online linkerati. Links are fundamental to high Google rankings and search engine optimisation, therefore your content must be reference worthy.

OK now you have had time to stew on it, it’s time to do a little keyword research, after all there is little point targeting keywords that are not been searched for. I like to use the Google keyword tool for this kind of research, simply type in a phrase that is relevant to what you are typing about. Look at the results and remember, the idea is not to target the high traffic words but the long tail low to medium traffic key phrases.

Once you have the keywords you wish to include in your post, now is the time to implement them into your page. For this you follow very basic on page optimisation rules. Make sure the keyword is in your title tag, use your headings to good effect, use the alt attribute in any images in the post and try to bold your keyword somewhere within the post body.

An additional step I like to take is linking back to your home page using the keyword as an anchor, not only does this send some authority back to your home page but also increases the relevancy of the keyword on your homepage. Stick to these very simple rules and you will find after a month your search traffic will have doubled and the more you do it the better you become.
